SpaceX has bought $329M worth of Tesla Megapacks so far this year
The financial ties binding Elon Musk’s corporate empire have tightened further, as revealed in recent regulatory filings. SpaceX has significantly accelerated its procurement of Tesla Megapacks, investing $295 million in the second quarter alone. This brings the aerospace giant's total expenditure on the industrial-scale battery storage units to $329 million for the year to date.
A Web of Interconnected Ventures
This massive capital flow highlights the increasingly blurred lines between Musk’s various business interests. As the CEO and primary shareholder of SpaceX, Musk also maintains his leadership role at Tesla. The ecosystem expanded further in 2025 when xAI—Musk’s artificial intelligence firm—acquired the social media platform X, and subsequently, SpaceX absorbed xAI.
Industry analysts suggest these Megapacks are being funneled directly into the massive data centers powering xAI’s operations. Before the merger, xAI had already invested $430 million in similar battery infrastructure, a sharp increase from the $34 million spent during the first quarter of the year.

Beyond Batteries: A Broader Corporate Synergy
The hardware integration between these companies extends beyond energy storage. According to recent filings, SpaceX had also acquired $131 million worth of Tesla Cybertrucks by the end of December 2025, purchasing the vehicles at the manufacturer’s suggested retail price.

While xAI has faced scrutiny for its reliance on natural gas—including the installation of unpermitted turbines near its Mississippi "Colossus" project—the Megapack remains a vital component of its infrastructure strategy. These batteries serve several critical functions:
- Instant Backup: They provide reliable, near-instantaneous power redundancy.
- Load Balancing: They supply supplemental energy to GPUs during periods of intense computational demand.
- Cost Efficiency: By smoothing out the volatile power spikes inherent in AI model training and inference, the batteries prevent costly utility surcharges and reduce strain on on-site generators.
As AI data centers continue to experience fluctuating power demands, the ability to store and deploy energy efficiently is becoming a competitive necessity. By leveraging Tesla’s battery technology, SpaceX and its subsidiary xAI are effectively internalizing a supply chain that ensures their high-performance computing clusters remain operational and cost-effective, further cementing the synergy within Musk’s technological conglomerate.
