Snapchat no longer rewards fully AI-generated Spotlight content

Snapchat has officially joined the growing list of tech giants taking a firm stand against the proliferation of "AI slop." In a move to preserve the platform’s focus on genuine human connection, the company announced on Friday that it is updating its recommendation algorithms to exclude fully AI-generated videos from its Spotlight feed.

Prioritizing Human Creativity

The platform’s decision is rooted in a desire to maintain Spotlight as a hub for authentic expression. By deprioritizing content created entirely by artificial intelligence, Snapchat aims to ensure that the spotlight remains on the unique perspectives and personal storytelling that define its community.

"We want Spotlight to remain a place where people can discover authentic creativity from real people, because we believe there’s enduring value in rewarding original perspectives, personal storytelling, and the moments that people choose to create and share themselves."

It is important to note that this is not a total ban on AI technology. Snapchat continues to encourage creators to utilize its suite of AI-powered creative tools to edit, enhance, or augment their original footage. The policy shift specifically targets content that lacks human authorship.

The Industry-Wide "AI Slop" Crackdown

Snapchat’s policy update reflects a broader industry trend as platforms grapple with the influx of low-quality, automated content. Other major players are taking similar steps to protect their user experience:

  • LinkedIn: Recently introduced a reporting feature that allows users to flag posts as "AI slop."
  • Substack: Rolled out tools designed to help readers identify AI-generated newsletters.
  • Meta: Retracted an Instagram feature that allowed users to AI-modify public photos following significant user backlash.
  • YouTube: Tightened monetization policies to prevent "inauthentic content"—including repetitive, template-based videos or AI-generated personas discussing sensitive topics like finance and health—from earning revenue.

A Safer Ecosystem

This algorithmic adjustment follows other recent safety initiatives at Snapchat. Last month, the company implemented stricter content controls for younger users, specifically those aged 13 to 15, limiting their ability to share Spotlight posts to only those they follow back. These combined efforts underscore Snapchat’s commitment to fostering a secure, human-centric environment as the digital landscape continues to evolve under the influence of generative AI.
