Plaud’s new earphones come with an eSIM-enabled case for talking to AI agents
The hardware market is currently saturated with a wave of "AI-first" gadgets—from smart pendants and rings to wristbands and credit-card-sized recording pucks. As manufacturers race to capture the note-taking and productivity market, Plaud is looking to distinguish itself by moving into a familiar, high-utility form factor: wireless earbuds.
With over 2.5 million users already utilizing its existing hardware and software ecosystem, the company is now introducing the Plaud One. These earbuds adopt a minimalist, AirPods-inspired aesthetic, but they are designed specifically to serve as an always-on bridge between human conversation and AI-driven productivity.
A New Form Factor for AI Productivity
While Plaud is not the first to enter the "smart earbud" space—facing competition from brands like Anker and Viaim—the company is banking on its robust software stack to win over power users. Once the Plaud One captures and transcribes a conversation, its integrated AI agent can interface directly with platforms such as Gmail, Slack, Notion, and Google Calendar.
The goal is to move beyond simple transcription. Plaud’s AI is designed to synthesize meeting contents into actionable outputs, including follow-up emails, formal documents, and slide presentations.
The eSIM Advantage
What truly sets the Plaud One apart from software-only competitors like Read AI, Fathom, or Granola is the hardware integration within the charging case. The case features eSIM support, allowing users to interact with their AI agents remotely without needing to tether the device to a smartphone or computer. This feature aims to make the AI feel like a persistent, independent assistant rather than just a phone app extension.
Technical Specifications and Performance
The Plaud One is built with both audio quality and recording utility in mind. Key features include:
- Audio Hardware: Equipped with 12mm drivers and active noise cancellation.
- Recording Range: The case is capable of capturing clear audio from speakers within a five-meter radius.
- Battery Life: The earbuds provide six hours of in-person meeting recording or three hours of call recording on a single charge.
- Total Capacity: When combined with the charging case, users can record up to 25 hours of audio before needing to plug in.
Regarding the business model, Plaud offers 300 minutes of free monthly transcription. Beyond that, users must subscribe to a plan, with pricing starting at $8.33 per month when billed annually.
Market Strategy and Future Outlook
Plaud is approaching this launch as a calculated trial run. The company is limiting the initial quantity of the Plaud One to gauge market appetite before committing to a larger production scale. Furthermore, the device is set to receive a significant update in the coming months that will introduce "agentic" capabilities. To support this, the company plans to implement a credit-based system for tasks, with early buyers receiving $200 in credits to spend on these advanced AI functions.
Despite the crowded market, Plaud’s leadership remains confident. CEO Nathan Xu believes the industry is moving toward a future where AI interaction is constant and seamless.
"[For AI] we need to have a wearable and an always-ready interface, one that people love to wear, is socially acceptable, and private by design," Xu stated during a recent briefing.
The Challenge of Adoption
Plaud faces the significant hurdle of convincing consumers to swap their existing AirPods, Pixel Buds, or Galaxy Buds for a specialized device. While these mainstream earbuds can technically perform similar tasks when paired with third-party apps, Xu argues that Plaud is not necessarily competing against audio giants, but rather positioning its meeting-focused technology within a form factor that users already find comfortable and socially acceptable.
With the company reporting an annual run-rate revenue of $100 million as of June, Plaud has the momentum to test this hypothesis. The Plaud One is currently available for preorder at $249, with shipments expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.
