OpenAI to start showing ads on ChatGPT’s free and Go tiers in India

The advertising industry’s reach continues to expand, and now it has officially arrived at the doorstep of the world’s most popular AI chatbot. OpenAI announced on Thursday that it is introducing advertisements to its ChatGPT Free and Go subscription tiers specifically for users in India.

This strategic shift follows a recent update to the company’s terms of service, which signaled that the AI developer would begin integrating promotional content into the user experience. With over 100 million weekly active users in India—a significant portion of whom utilize the free or entry-level Go plans—the market represents a massive opportunity for the company to monetize its massive footprint.

A Strategic Rollout for Advertisers

OpenAI is wasting no time in populating its platform with commercial content. The company confirmed that it is launching with 50 initial brands and has secured partnerships with major global advertising agencies, WPP and Omnicom.

To streamline this transition, the company plans to debut an ad manager platform next month. This tool will empower marketers to build and deploy campaigns, provided they meet a daily minimum budget of ₹725 (approximately $7.60).

“With ChatGPT Ads, businesses of every size can introduce themselves at relevant, high-context moments when decisions are beginning to take shape,” said Dave Dugan, head of global ads solutions at OpenAI.

Deepening Roots in the Indian Market

OpenAI has invested heavily in capturing the Indian market over the past year. In August 2025, the company introduced the ChatGPT Go plan at a sub-$5 price point, even offering a limited-time promotion that provided a full year of access for free.

The company’s aggressive growth strategy has also included:

  • High-profile advertising campaigns during major sporting events like the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Women’s Premier League (WPL).
  • The strategic hiring of Uber’s former India head to spearhead regional expansion efforts.

Financial Momentum and Future Outlook

The introduction of ads in India follows similar rollouts in the United States this past February and across Europe earlier this month. As OpenAI eyes a potential IPO in the near future, the pressure to solidify diverse revenue streams has intensified.

Financial reports indicate that the company is on a strong upward trajectory, recording $6.7 billion in revenue for the second quarter ending June 2026, up from $5.7 billion in the previous quarter. With ambitious goals to reach 220 million paying subscribers by 2030, the move to monetize its massive free-tier user base is a critical step in the company’s long-term financial roadmap.
