Hugging Face is selling a cute $399 open source duck robot, Microduck
Hugging Face has officially entered the consumer robotics space with the launch of the Microduck, an adorable, duck-inspired robot priced at $399. Designed to be accessible and highly programmable, the device is slated to begin shipping before the holiday season.
Democratizing Physical AI
Clem Delangue, the CEO of Hugging Face, framed the release as a significant milestone for the company’s mission.
“Welcome to the era of open-source affordable robots to democratize physical AI and world models!” Delangue stated, emphasizing that the Microduck is an “open-source robot you can teach new tricks with reinforcement learning.”
Standing at 25 centimeters tall, the robot is surprisingly capable. It can waddle across surfaces, crouch, recover its balance after falling, and even navigate on roller skates. Furthermore, its beak is engineered to manipulate objects, boasting a lifting capacity of up to 800 grams.
Hardware Roots and Technical Specs
While Hugging Face is primarily recognized as the premier hub for open-source model weights, its hardware ambitions were solidified in April 2025 with the acquisition of French startup Pollen Robotics. This partnership previously yielded the Reachy Mini desktop robot, and the Microduck represents the next step in their collaborative roadmap.
The Microduck is equipped with a sophisticated sensor suite to perceive its environment:
- Integrated Camera: For visual processing.
- Lidar Sensors: For spatial awareness and navigation.
- Dual IMUs: Inertial measurement units that track the robot’s orientation and movement.
Pollen Robotics has confirmed that the robot’s behavioral training occurs in a simulated environment before being deployed directly to the hardware. Developers can continuously refine, retrain, and redeploy these behaviors, with the full software development kit (SDK) and training stack now available on GitHub.
Privacy and the Open Source Advantage
Addressing concerns regarding cameras in private living spaces, Delangue has previously argued that open-source systems offer superior privacy compared to "black box" alternatives controlled by opaque organizations. However, users should remain aware that while the underlying model is transparent, third-party applications installed on the device could potentially access sensor data and transmit it to external services.
Industry Context
The debut of the Microduck arrives amid significant industry buzz, including reports that Nvidia is eyeing an acquisition of Hugging Face at a $13 billion valuation. The two companies have maintained a long-standing infrastructure partnership since 2023 and share a public commitment to the advancement of open-source AI.
This launch also follows a recent cybersecurity challenge for Hugging Face, involving a breach of its sandbox environment during safety testing by OpenAI.
