Google gives publishers a new way to fight AI-driven traffic losses

As the rise of generative AI continues to reshape the digital landscape—often at the expense of traditional website traffic—Google is introducing a new mechanism designed to help publishers reclaim their visibility. The tech giant is rolling out an interactive "Preferred Sources" button that website owners can embed directly onto their platforms, allowing readers to signal their loyalty and ensure these outlets appear more prominently across Google Search, Discover, and Google News.

Empowering Readers and Publishers

This initiative serves as an expansion of the "Preferred Sources" feature Google initially debuted in May. Previously limited to AI Overviews and AI Mode, the tool is now migrating to the broader ecosystem of Google’s discovery platforms. By placing this button on their own sites, publishers can foster a direct connection with their audience, ensuring that their content remains a priority when users interact with Google’s search and news products.

"The idea is to make it easier for readers to find links from the sites they know and trust when they’re searching for content or interacting with Google’s AI to learn about a topic or read the latest news."

The data suggests this strategy could be a vital lifeline for traffic-dependent businesses. According to Google, internal studies have shown that users are twice as likely to click through to a preferred source when that option is available. Since the initial launch in May, the company reports that users have already designated over 345,000 unique sources as favorites.

Customizing the Discovery Experience

Beyond the new button, Google is enhancing how users curate their own content consumption. The company announced that readers will soon gain the ability to customize their Discover feed using natural language. By tapping the three-dot menu on any feed item, users can provide specific instructions on the topics they wish to see more or less of, allowing the algorithm to adjust in real time.

Key Updates at a Glance:

  • Preferred Sources Button: Publishers can now embed a button on their sites to let users prioritize their content.
  • Natural Language Feed Tuning: Users can now dictate their Discover feed preferences using conversational commands.
  • Audio Briefing Customization: Android users will gain the ability to personalize their daily audio briefings within the Google News app.

A Growing Industry Trend

Google is not alone in this shift toward user-controlled algorithms. In recent months, several major social media platforms have introduced similar tools, acknowledging that users want more agency over the content recommended to them. By providing these granular controls, Google is attempting to mitigate the friction caused by AI-powered search features while simultaneously strengthening the bond between high-quality publishers and their core audiences. As the digital ecosystem evolves, these tools represent a significant step toward balancing automated convenience with the necessity of human-curated, trusted journalism.
