General Catalyst leads $1.1B round into 2-month-old River AI

In a staggering display of investor confidence, River AI—a startup barely two months out of stealth—has secured a massive $1.1 billion in funding. The seed/Series A round was co-led by General Catalyst and AMP PBC, an AI-focused investment firm established in 2026 by former Andreessen Horowitz partner Anjney Midha. The round also saw participation from industry heavyweights including Nvidia, AMD Ventures, Y Combinator, and Temasek.

A New Vision for Personal Agents

The company is spearheaded by Igor Babuschkin, a veteran of the AI industry with high-profile tenures at DeepMind and OpenAI, and a co-founder of xAI. Babuschkin’s ambition for River AI is nothing short of a complete architectural overhaul of the current AI landscape. Rather than chasing the industry-standard goal of building models designed to replace human labor, Babuschkin aims to democratize AI by creating "personally trainable assistants."

“Capable agents will be a normal part of everyday life. Less like the assistants you call on today when you need a task done, more like guardian angels: quietly present, on your side, helping with what actually matters to you. They will know you well, and they will be yours, not someone else’s.”

Rebuilding the AI Stack

To realize this vision, River AI is focusing on an end-to-end reconstruction of the AI stack, encompassing training methodologies, model architecture, and even hardware integration. The company’s current product offering is a direct challenge to the limitations of prompt engineering. By providing an API that supports reinforcement learning (RL) and low-rank adaptation (LoRA) fine-tuning, River AI allows developers to move beyond static prompts.

  • Customization: Users can train open models into bespoke tools that they truly own.
  • Efficiency: The company’s "neocloud" offering allows enterprises to execute complex reinforcement learning runs in just 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: River claims its infrastructure can deliver two to four times the cost savings compared to closed-source alternatives, all without requiring a dedicated infrastructure team.

The Future of Personal AI

While the $1.1 billion valuation reflects the current "overheated" atmosphere of the AI sector, River AI’s timing appears calculated. As enterprises increasingly seek to avoid vendor lock-in by utilizing a mix of open-weight models, River is positioning itself as the essential layer for post-training expertise.

The broader industry is already trending toward this decentralized future. With the emergence of locally running agents like OpenClaw and the push by Nvidia to partner with hardware giants like Microsoft, Dell, and HP for AI-capable PCs, the infrastructure for personal AI is rapidly maturing.

Whether River AI can successfully differentiate its technology in this crowded field remains to be seen. However, with a massive war chest and a clear mandate to shift the focus from corporate-controlled models to personal, guardian-like agents, the startup is well-equipped to attempt a fundamental shift in how we interact with artificial intelligence.
