Ex-Spotify employees raise $10M to bring the AI behind its recommendations to e-commerce

A trio of former Spotify engineers—Sidd Motwani, Ian Anderson, and Shivaditya Sinha—is setting out to revolutionize the digital storefront. Having spent years refining the behavioral intelligence infrastructure that powers Spotify’s recommendation engine, the team is now applying that same expertise to the e-commerce sector through their new startup, Malachyte.

The company announced on Thursday that it has successfully secured $10 million in seed funding. The capital injection is earmarked for scaling distribution efforts and expanding the team with new product and commercial leadership.

Beyond Historical Data

Malachyte was founded on the premise that current e-commerce personalization is fundamentally flawed. Most online retailers rely on outdated metrics, such as demographic segmentation, static customer profiles, or past purchase history. This approach often leaves first-time visitors staring at generic, uninspired storefronts, while returning customers are served recommendations based on what they bought weeks ago rather than what they need in the present moment.

To bridge this gap, Malachyte utilizes a proprietary "two-headed Vector AI" system. This technology is designed to predict a shopper's immediate intent, learn their unique tastes, and continuously calibrate the shopping experience in real time.

"[Our] system starts forming before the first click, using the context available the moment the page loads. Within a single session, we build a real read on both preferences and what someone is trying to accomplish right now," said Sidd Motwani, CEO of Malachyte.

Real-Time Intent Recognition

The system’s power lies in its ability to interpret granular user signals—such as hovers, search refinements, and scrolling patterns—without requiring a user to be logged in.

  • Immediate Adaptation: A search for "heavy-duty boots" followed by a few clicks on steel-toed footwear triggers an instant reordering of the page, prioritizing work pants and gloves while deprioritizing unrelated items like dress shoes.
  • Contextual Awareness: The platform recognizes that a user browsing on a phone at 11 p.m. via an email link is in a different mindset than a user on a laptop during the workday, adjusting the experience accordingly.
  • Continuous Learning: Every interaction sharpens the user’s profile, ensuring that the experience becomes more relevant the longer they stay and remains personalized upon their return.

Scaling and Future Vision

Malachyte has been in development and testing since 2024, having collaborated with over 20 enterprise-level customers across the travel, grocery, and retail sectors. The platform officially launched for Fun.com in the fall of 2025. Since June 2026, it has been available to Shopify merchants via a native integration, while larger retailers can access the technology through a dedicated API.

Looking ahead, Motwani envisions a future where merchandising and marketing strategies are unified by a single, deep understanding of customer behavior. The startup’s recent funding round was co-led by Bessemer Venture Partners and Gradient, with additional participation from Harpoon Ventures.

By treating every click as a signal rather than an afterthought, Malachyte aims to turn the static, one-size-fits-all web experience into a dynamic, intent-aware journey that mirrors the highly personalized discovery engines that have become the gold standard in streaming media.
