Airbnb says AI is helping it ship features faster as it tests a new search function
While Airbnb has taken a measured, deliberate approach to integrating AI into its consumer-facing interface, the company is aggressively leveraging the technology behind the scenes to accelerate its development lifecycle. During the company’s second-quarter earnings call, CEO and co-founder Brian Chesky revealed that artificial intelligence has become a cornerstone of its engineering operations, with AI now responsible for writing roughly 60% of the company’s code.
Accelerating the Development Pipeline
The impact of this internal AI adoption is measurable and significant. According to Chesky, the integration of these tools has fundamentally changed how the company builds, tests, and iterates on its platform.
“Today, we’re building, testing, and iterating faster than we could just a year ago. Across some of our key initiatives, we’ve reduced the time from concept to launch by as much as 60%. And compared to the same six months last year, we’ve increased the number of features and improvements we shipped this year by nearly 80%,” Chesky stated.
This surge in productivity has touched critical areas of the platform, including sign-up flows, checkout processes, payment systems, and core search functionality. Additionally, the company has deployed AI to streamline host onboarding, reducing friction for new property owners joining the platform.
A New Approach to AI-Powered Search
Until now, Airbnb has been cautious about introducing generative AI to its users, largely avoiding the standard chatbot-style interface in favor of more practical applications like review summaries. However, the company is finally preparing to test a new, AI-driven search experience.
Rather than forcing a radical change on its user base, Airbnb is opting for a flexible approach. The new search feature will be accessible via a toggle, allowing users to switch between the traditional filter-based search and a natural language AI interface.
- Conversational Discovery: Users can type queries in plain English to receive personalized, visual results.
- Dynamic Content: Search titles and product highlights will be generated in real-time, offering a more tailored experience for every traveler.
- User Choice: By keeping the toggle, Airbnb ensures that power users who prefer the existing search parameters are not alienated by the new AI layer.
Efficiency Gains in Customer Support
Beyond product development and search, Airbnb has seen massive success in deploying AI within its customer support infrastructure. The company’s AI-powered agent, which launched in North America in 2025, has since expanded to support over 50 languages, with plans to integrate voice support later this year.
The efficiency gains are stark:
- 45% of customer issues are now resolved entirely by the AI agent without human intervention.
- Support costs per booking have dropped by 16% year-over-year.
These operational efficiencies contributed to a strong financial quarter. Airbnb reported a 17% increase in revenue to $3.6 billion, while adjusted EBITDA climbed 21% to $1.3 billion. As the company continues to refine its AI strategy, these metrics suggest that the technology is not just a trend for Airbnb, but a primary driver of its long-term operational health and product velocity.
